God who created all things through Jesus Christ (Ephesians 3:9)
Orthodoxy has believed as St Paul taught that Jesus, the Second Person of the Holy Trinity, created the heavens and the earth. So we profess in the Nicene Creed that we believe… :
… in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the only-begotten, begotten of the Father before all ages. Light of Light; true God of true God; begotten, not made; of one essence with the Father, by whom all things were made…
Orthodox scholar Anestis Keselopoulos comments:
The creative energy of God effected the purpose which He gave to matter, set the world in motion, and operates through the natural laws, with which the world was already developing before the appearance of man. . . . The aim of natural contemplation, then, is the study of God’s ‘word’ in nature and the discovery of His personal and creative uniqueness through the beauty, artistry, and wisdom that exist in things. (MAN AND THE ENVIRONMENT, p 103)
So in the Church we don’t study the created order as science does (which is also a legitimate way to study the world or the universe and which has uncovered many truths about creation that we would never have learned from a theological study of it). We are looking for the spiritual truth contained in creation. Thus, Clement of Alexandria can claim:
So, in reality, every place where we think about God is a sacred place. And every occasion when we think about God is a sacred occasion. (THE ONE WHO KNOWS GOD, pp 73-74)
In the Church we should not be acting as if there is a secular truth opposed to a sacred truth. All truth is sacred since it should lead us back to the Creator of all things. All truth is Christian. There may be truths which are painful or inconvenient, but they are true nonetheless.
For we cannot do anything against the truth, but only for the truth. (2 Corinthians 13:8)
