Assuredly, I say to you, all sins will be forgiven the sons of men, and whatever blasphemies they may utter; but he who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness, but is subject to eternal condemnation” – because they said, “He has an unclean spirit. (Mark 3:28-30)
Our Lord Jesus promises that ALL of our sins will be forgiven! He does provide only one exception to His promise: to blaspheme against the Holy Spirit is to commit an unforgiveable sin. Jesus says that things spoken against Him will be forgiven (Matthew 12:31; Luke 12:10), which is something Christians seem to forget when they are confronted by people speaking against Christ. Jesus forgives them, so should we. What follows are a series of sayings from various saints in the Church about sin and forgiveness:
Augustine, said: ‘Every individual will receive from God the amount of indulgence he has himself given to his neighbour.’
Jerome said: ‘As God in Christ has forgiven us our sins, so let us also forgive those who sin against us.’
Gregory, said: ‘Only the one who has forgiven can seek forgiveness.’
Isidore said: ‘In vain do they who neglect being reconciled with their neighbours seek to be reconciled with God.’
Caesarius said: ‘There is no trace of sin remaining in the soul that generously forgives the one who sins against it.’ (Defensor Grammaticus [7th Century], DRINKING FROM THE HIDDEN FOUNTAIN, p 231)
